About the Book of 1 Samuel

First Samuel covers one of the most dramatic transitions in Israel's history: from the loose confederation of tribes governed by judges to a centralized monarchy under a king. Three towering figures dominate the book — Samuel, the last and greatest of the judges and a prophet; Saul, Israel's first king; and David, the shepherd-boy who becomes Israel's greatest king.

The book opens with Samuel's miraculous birth and calling, then traces Israel's fateful demand for a king "like all the nations" (chapter 8) — a request that God grants while warning them of its costs. Saul's promising beginning gives way to disobedience and divine rejection. The famous story of David and Goliath (chapter 17) introduces a young man who fights not with armor but with faith: "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty."

The deepening friendship between David and Jonathan, Saul's increasingly paranoid pursuit of David, and David's repeated refusal to harm "the LORD's anointed" even when given the opportunity — these narratives together paint a portrait of character under pressure. First Samuel asks: What makes someone a true leader? Not size, strength, or royal blood, but a heart after God.
