About the Book of John

The Gospel of John is the most theologically rich of the four Gospels and the one most commonly placed in the hands of new believers. Written by the apostle John, it opens with a stunning declaration: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This sets the tone for a Gospel that continually presses the reader to answer: Who is Jesus?

John is structured around seven miraculous signs — turning water to wine, healing the blind, raising Lazarus, and others — and seven "I am" statements in which Jesus identifies Himself: "I am the bread of life," "I am the light of the world," "I am the good shepherd," "I am the resurrection and the life," "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Each is both an invitation and a claim to divinity.

The Gospel reaches its climax in chapters 13-17, where Jesus speaks intimately to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion — washing their feet, promising the Holy Spirit, and praying for all future believers. John's stated purpose is clear: "these things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." No book of the Bible more directly addresses the question of eternal life.
