About the Book of Obadiah

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament — just 21 verses — and its subject is the judgment of Edom, the nation descended from Esau, Jacob's brother. When Jerusalem fell to Babylon, the Edomites not only celebrated but actively participated in the disaster: blocking escape routes, handing survivors over to their enemies, and plundering the city. Obadiah's oracle is God's response to that betrayal.

The first part (verses 1-9) pronounces judgment on Edom's pride. Edom was a mountain people, with strongholds carved into cliff faces, and they trusted in their geographical security: "Who can bring me down to the ground?" God's answer: "Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down." The second part (verses 10-14) catalogs Edom's specific sins against Judah on the day of its calamity.

Obadiah ends with hope for Israel and judgment for Edom, and the declaration: "The kingdom will be the LORD's." The message of this small book resonates beyond its specific historical context: cruelty and gloating at a neighbor's misfortune do not go unnoticed by God. National pride built on the suffering of others has no lasting foundation. And however dark the present moment, God's kingdom will ultimately prevail.
