βΒΆ Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.β
βFor God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.β
βAnd if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.β
βΒΆ How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.β
βΒΆ For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also [is] Christ.β
βFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether [we be] Jews or Gentiles, whether [we be] bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.β
βAnd whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.β
βBut now [are they] many members, yet but one body.β
βΒΆ Follow after charity, and desire spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy.β
βFor he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.β
βFor the body is not one member, but many.β
βBrethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.β
βIf any man speak in an [unknown] tongue, [let it be] by two, or at the most [by] three, and [that] by course; and let one interpret.β
βΒΆ Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.β
βΒΆ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.β
βNay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:β
βAnd those [members] of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely [parts] have more abundant comeliness.β
βAnd God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.β
βBut if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.β
βBut now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.β
βFor our comely [parts] have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that [part] which lacked:β
βAnd the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.β
βThat there should be no schism in the body; but [that] the members should have the same care one for another.β
βWherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.β
βSo likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.β
βΒΆ What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?β
βIf any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.β
βBut if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.β
βIf the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?β
βAnd if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?β
βIf the whole body [were] an eye, where [were] the hearing? If the whole [were] hearing, where [were] the smelling?β
βAnd if they were all one member, where [were] the body?β
βAnd even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?β
βFor if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.β
βFor ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.β
βBut he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.β
βWherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.β
βThere are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them [is] without signification.β
βLet the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.β
βIf [any thing] be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.β
βWherefore let him that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret.β
βElse when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?β
βYet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that [by my voice] I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an [unknown] tongue.β
