βAnd lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, [even] all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.β
βFor the customs of the people [are] vain: for [one] cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.β
βThey deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.β
βThus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.β

βΒΆ Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, [Ye] men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.β
βThat they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:β
βFor as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.β
βTake heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.β
βFor though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)β
βThe carpenter stretcheth out [his] rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.β
βNeither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;β
βFor in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.β
βAnd the residue thereof he maketh a god, [even] his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth [it], and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou [art] my god.β
βAnd none considereth in his heart, neither [is there] knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten [it]: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?β
βWhen the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;β
βThen shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth [it], and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth [it]; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.β
βThey have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; [and] their hearts, that they cannot understand.β
βHe feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, [Is there] not a lie in my right hand?β
βΒΆ They that make a graven image [are] all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they [are] their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.β
βWho hath formed a god, or molten a graven image [that] is profitable for nothing?β
βBehold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they [are] of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; [yet] they shall fear, [and] they shall be ashamed together.β
βThe smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.β
βHe heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish [it].β
βHe burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth [himself], and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:β
βDay unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.β
β[There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard.β
βTheir line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,β
βFor all the gods of the nations [are] idols: but the LORD made the heavens.β
βΒΆ As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.β
βΒΆ I [am] the LORD, and [there is] none else, [there is] no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:β
βNevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.β
βAnd saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:β
βWho in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.β
