Book of 2 John
A brief letter emphasizing truth and love.
About the Book of 2 John
Second John is a brief letter — just 13 verses — addressed to "the chosen lady and her children," which likely refers to a local church and its members. John writes primarily to commend the community for walking in the truth and to warn them against welcoming false teachers into their homes and gatherings.
The letter is built around two concerns that may appear to be in tension: love and truth. John celebrates the love within the community and calls them to love one another. But he also insists that love must be rooted in truth — specifically, in the truth about Jesus Christ who came in the flesh. Those who deny this are "the deceiver and the antichrist," and John instructs the community not to welcome such teachers into their homes, for to do so would be to share in their wickedness.
Second John offers a short but significant contribution to the question of Christian community and discernment: genuine hospitality is not the same as undiscriminating openness. The Christian call to love does not require abandoning the truth that makes love coherent. A community that embraces everyone regardless of what they teach about Christ will find its love emptied of its foundation. Truth and love, for John, are not competitors but inseparable partners.
