About the Book of Isaiah

Isaiah is the longest prophetic book in the Bible and one of the most quoted in the New Testament. Often called "the fifth Gospel," it contains some of the most profound Messianic prophecies in all of Scripture — most famously the Suffering Servant passages in chapters 52-53, which describe the crucifixion of Jesus in remarkable detail, written 700 years before the event.

The book divides into two major sections. Chapters 1-39 focus primarily on judgment — Isaiah's warnings to Judah, Israel, and surrounding nations. Yet even here, hope breaks through: Chapter 9 promises a child born to us — "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Chapter 40 begins the great turning point with the words: "Comfort, comfort my people, says your God."

Chapters 40-66 are saturated with consolation and promise. Here we find "those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles" (40:31), the promise that God has inscribed us on the palms of His hands (49:16), and the great invitation: "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters" (55:1). Isaiah sees farther and more clearly than almost any other Old Testament prophet, making his book an essential companion for understanding who Jesus is and what He came to do.
