About the Book of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew was written primarily for a Jewish audience and presents Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah — the fulfillment of the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. Matthew opens with a genealogy tracing Jesus back to Abraham and David, establishing His right to the throne of Israel. He uses "the Kingdom of Heaven" more than any other Gospel writer, linking Jesus' teachings to the Old Testament promises of God's reign.

Matthew is home to the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5-7), perhaps the most famous extended teaching in history. The Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, "turn the other cheek," "love your enemies," and "Do not worry" — all come from this section. Jesus presents a righteousness that exceeds that of the Pharisees, not by following more rules but by transforming the heart.

Matthew also records the Great Commission (28:18-20), Christ's final command to His followers: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." It is a mandate that has driven Christian mission for two thousand years and remains the central calling of every believer.
