About the Book of Zephaniah

Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah (640-609 BC), before the great reformation described in 2 Kings 22-23, and may have contributed to the spiritual climate that made that reformation possible. His ancestry is unusually traced back four generations to "Hezekiah" — likely the famous king — making him a member of the royal family who preached against the royal establishment.

The book's opening is among the most dramatic in prophetic literature: God announces a total sweeping away of everything from the face of the earth — not just Judah but all nations, all creatures. The "Day of the LORD" looms like a great darkness over the first two chapters, calling Judah to repentance while pronouncing judgment on surrounding nations. The middle section calls the humble and righteous to seek the LORD before the day of judgment arrives.

But the book turns in its final chapter to one of the most tender passages in all the prophets — a vision of God's joy over His restored people that is almost overwhelming: "The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." The God who judges is also the God who sings over His people with delight — a breathtaking combination of holiness and love.
